USYS Project Cohort at HYSA

Hudson Youth Soccer has been selected by US Youth Soccer to pilot the new “Project Cohort” training and game model for our youngest players (Small Fry and Advanced Small Fry). This pilot is part of the USYS Game Format Project and is designed to match how young children learn: simple formats, lots of ball touches, and short, fun games that keep everyone moving.

What is Project Cohort?

Project Cohort organizes training and play into right-sized formats (mostly 2v2 and 3v3) with quick “new ball” restarts and short mini-games. The goals are simple:

  • more time with the ball for every child

  • clearer decisions (attack toward the goal, defend by blocking/pressing)

  • sessions that feel fun, fast, and age-appropriate

What’s changing at Small Fry and Advanced Small Fry

  • Smaller-sided games, more touches. Players rotate through short 2v2 or 3v3 games with frequent ball restarts.

  • Simple rules, lots of play. We keep the ball in play and move quickly to the next rep so players learn by doing.

  • Consistent session flow. A short welcome, a few guided activities, then several quick mini-games. Total time: about 45–60 minutes.

Introducing Game Facilitators (new volunteer role)

To support the new format, we’re adding Game Facilitators. This is not a referee and not a traditional coach. Facilitators:

  • start games, keep them flowing, and ensure safety

  • use simple prompts like “dribble toward the goal,” “great block,” or “find a teammate”

  • step in on rules only when players cannot self-correct

No soccer experience required. We provide a short orientation and a one-page cheat sheet with suggested language.

What parents can expect

  • A fun, fast, child-centered environment. Expect lots of small games, quick substitutions, and tons of touches.

  • Positive sideline language. The best help is naming what you see: dribble, pass, shoot when attacking and press, challenge, block when defending. When they’re done playing, the best words are: “I love watching you play.”

  • Clear communication from HYSA. We’ll share field maps, weekly plans, and the Game Facilitator quick-start guide before sessions begin.

Why this matters

Project Cohort is built to grow confidence, keep kids active, and build a love of the game that lasts. We’re proud HYSA was chosen to help shape this national model and excited for your players to experience it.
