HYSA Junior Referee Program

The Junior Referee Program will allow grassroots referee development by allowing those who will be 12 years of age as of the start of the season to begin training to become certified referees once they are 14 years of age.  The Junior Referee Program has no age limit, allowing those 14 and older to experience refereeing in a supervised and mentored manner and with low pressure grade 1/2 games.

The goal of the Junior Referee Program is to develop knowledgeable, confident referees capable of refereeing multiple age level games.  Refereeing is a great way to learn responsibility and leadership skills, stay involved with Soccer as players age out of recreational programs, and make some extra money!

All junior referees that complete the training pre-season and wish to continue and referee games must purchase a referee kit consisting of approved yellow jersey, shorts, socks, whistle and yellow and red cards (click HERE to be directed to Official Sports, Inc.).  This cost will be reimbursed by HYSA at the midpoint and end of the season once the junior referee has completed 2 game assignments.  Junior referees receive a $20 gift card for each game worked at the midpoint and end of each season in addition to the kit reimbursement ($65 maximum reimbursement for kit)

Referee Duties:

·         Arrive 30 minutes early to the game

·         Check the field of play for hazards

·         Ensure nets are intact and goals are secured

·         SAFE – FAIR – FUN

o   The referee is responsible for ensuring a safe environment for players

§  Ensure nets are intact and goals secured

§  Check the field of play for hazards

§  Player checks – cleats, shin guards, jewelry, etc.

o   The referee is responsible for ensuring a FAIR game for players

§  Enforce the laws of the game

§  Control the game

§  Act as a time keeper and record keeper for the game

§  Disciplinary action against players in accordance with the laws of the game

o   The referee is responsible for ensure a FUN game for players

§  Fair enforcement of the laws of the game
